BROOKFIELD, Wis.–As the “Great Resignation” continues to make it difficult for employers to recruit and retain staff, two people believe credit unions are better positioned than most companies when it comes to hiring and keeping workers.
“I'd be willing to bet that credit unions fare better than most organizations here,” said Mike Homer, VP, product management, depository Institutions with Fiserv. “When we take a look at the data, why people are leaving, they leave for money sometimes, but a lot of people don't feel connected to the mission and purpose of an organization, outside of the military. And nobody's better at creating purpose than credit unions. They are straightforward, and they are something you can connect with. So, I don’t think credit unions will get hit as hard here as everybody else.”
Word of Caution
However, cautioned Theo Curey, SVP, business unit president, credit union solutions with Fiserv, CUs need to be careful about having “tenured-based conversations” with young people they are considering hiring.
“I think that's disconcerting and disenfranchising to have these kinds of conversations,” Curey said. “Younger people get the feeling, then, that they have to be at the credit union a long time before someone will take them seriously.”
