WASHINGTON–With approximately seven weeks left until the national elections, credit unions have even lower expectations than usual for Congress.
CUNA’s chief advocacy officer, Ryan Donovan, said he expects a “modest agenda” from Congress, especially with priorities elsewhere for many, with the entire House up for re-election and 34 Senate seats also up for grabs. The only substantive issue in front of Congress is to pass a budget—typically a contentious issue—by Sept. 30. Donovan said that short of some significant legislation either being introduced or moving forward, Congress could even adjourn a week early.
During the remaining session Donovan said CUNA will continue to emphasize the messages it has stressed since the beginning of the year, especially around the need for regulatory relief and the cost of the regulatory burden to credit unions and their members, most especially the middle class.
