WASHIINGTON–Many political analysts are already forecasting that November’s elections will bring a change in the majority in Congress from Democratic control to Republican control. What might such a change mean to credit unions and the credit union agenda in Washington?
“Credit unions enjoy broad support from both sides of the aisle,” said NAFCU VP-Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler. “So many of the issues we advocate for have bipartisan support. We always try to seek bipartisanship on our issues.
“A Republican Congress may have slightly different agenda, and we could see attention to other issues such as regulatory relief and more oversight of agencies,” Thaler continued. “It could be something different. The issues are likely to remain the same but what gets attention could likely change under Republican control. What ultimately moves ultimately depends on what the majority looks like. We see in the Democratic Congress with the narrow majority how hard it is to move any legislation. It could be a similar situation.”
