What CUs Are Watching in House, Senate This Week

WASHINGTON–The House and Senate are in session this week as they prepare to head home for Spring break at week’s end. There are no hearings scheduled that are of direct interest to credit unions, but several in which CUs do have an indirect stake.

On Wednesday, the House Financial Services Committee will hold its semi-annual hearing on the CFPB at which director Richard Cordray will be a witness. Also on Wednesday, the House will hold a hearing on the current state of retirement security.

On Thursday, the House Financial Services committee’ Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit will hold a hearing on the federal financial regulatory system and reform.

“It’s a topic on which we have a number of ideas and will submit a letter,” said CUNA’s Chief Advocacy Officer, Ryan Donovan.

Donovan said CUNA is also continuing to lobby to ensure a full appropriation for the CDFI fund, which has been targeted for cuts by the Trump Administration.

“This is a program that credit unions and small banks use to leverage grants to improve the communities,” said Donovan.

At the end of the week the Senate will recess until April 24; the House will recess until April 25.
