We Tried to Warn You, But You Blocked Us: Why NAFCU is Meeting with the FCC

ARLINGTON, Va.–NAFCU is reporting it continues to hold multiple meetings with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) related to proposals around robocalls and robocall-blocking technology to ensure credit unions aren’t hurt by the agency’s good intentions.

Ann Petros

“We want to ensure the processes for those automated blocking mechanisms provide opportunities for redress so that entities like credit unions that are making legitimate calls and communications to their members regarding important information on their accounts aren't receiving a lot of blocks,” explained Ann Petros, vice president of regulatory affairs with the trade group.

Time-Sensitive Issues

In addition, said Petros, NAFCU’s discussions with the FCC have sought to ensure that if a credit union’s communications are blocked there is the opportunity to address that issue with the voice service operators and carriers to remove those blocks “in a timely fashion so that those important communications” can be made, especially given the time-sensitive nature of many alerts.

“We’re  focused on ensuring the consent mechanisms are appropriate for the blocking that they're trying to implement through these proposals,” said Petros.
