AUGUSTA, Maine—State regulators here are warning financial institutions about a text messaging scam that’s attempting to steal account information.
Maine’s Bureau of Financial Institutions reported that the messages appear to come from a person’s bank or credit union and indicate there is a problem with an account or debit card.
According to the regulator, scammers urgently request account and other personal information in order to fix the nonexistent problem, noting that customers and members of several banks and credit unions have received the text message. The message does not contain the name of any particular institution and appears randomly sent to cellphone numbers without targeting consumers at any particular institution, the newspaper said.
Meanwhile, in another state, Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union has also alerted the public and its members to a phishing scam using the CU’s name.
According to PSECU, scammers will call or text victims claiming to be PSECU using a 844 or 855 area code. PSECU has also stated that it is not the only financial institution being targeted.
