ROME, N.Y.–A number of credit unions are responding to the solar eclipse that will take place today with promotions, office closings, giveaways and more.
Among them:
America CU Offering Giveaways Loan Discounts
With 12 of its branches to be in the “path of totality” during today’s solar eclipse, AmeriCU Credit Union has announced a number of related social media giveaways, financial center celebrations, loan discount offers, and new “totality” awesome checking accounts.
“In celebration of the festivities AmeriCU is letting members know about their ongoing specials that are eclipsing the competition,” the credit union said. “Members visiting any AmeriCU location can take advantage of exclusive loan discounts and new checking account products, making it easier for members to get on the right path to financial freedom.”
Branches to Close
In Watertown, N.Y., Northern Credit Union here said it will close its offices today due to the solar eclipse.
The decision isn’t based on superstitions, but instead on the crowds of people expected in the area to view what will be a total eclipse in Watertown.
The credit union is one of a number of area businesses that have said they will also be closing.
Special Viewing Glasses for Kids
In Memphis, Orion Federal Credit Union said it is donating donate 20,000 eclipse-viewing glasses to area schools and community partners in the greater Memphis area.
These glasses, made by American Paper Optics in Bartlett, Tenn., are to be used for safe viewing of the solar eclipse.
“This is another great opportunity for us to support local business by purchasing these glasses from American Paper Optics in Bartlett while also supporting teachers and students in our community,” said Orion CEO Daniel Weickenand.
The partial solar eclipse will be visible in the Mid-South area on Monday, April 8, from 12:40 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. In Memphis, the most exciting two minutes will happen at approximately 1:55 p.m., depending on the exact location in the city. The eclipse will be almost in totality, as the sun is predicted to be around 97% covered by the moon.
Offices to Close Temporarily
In Painted Post, N.Y., ServU Federal Credit Union said it will temporarily close on April 8th to give employees an opportunity to view the solar eclipse.
All ServU branches will close between 3:00 and 3:30PM today. The credit union said its online and mobile banking, ATMs and telephone teller services will still be available.
A Lesson in Savings Growth
Dupaco Community Credit Union is using the solar eclipse and the time until the next one appears in North America to put some sunlight on how
Noting the next solar eclipse won’t occur over the U.S. until 2044, Dupaco Community Credit Union noted that $1 stashed away this year into a savings account that earns 1.8% interest (the average savings rate over the last 20 years) would be $1.43 in that savings account by August 23, 2044
“But, if a person deposits one dollar in that same savings account every day for the 20-year period between eclipses, they would have contributed $7,300 and earned $1,401.47 in interest for a total of $8,702.47,” the credit union said.
And that’s just the return on a low-rate savings account, Dupaco Community CU added, noting it also offers other investment options such as certificates, IRAs, money markets, and more.
