OLYMPIA, Wash.–Washington State Employees Credit Union (WSECU) has partnered with the state Department of Revenue to provide a free check cashing service for Working Families Tax Credit refund checks.
According to the $5.3-billion credit union, Working Families Tax Credit recipients, regardless of their banking status, can cash their tax credit check at any WSECU location with a valid photo ID.
“While many program participants receive refunds via direct deposit or on a prepaid debit card, some people choose a paper check,” the credit union said. “If the taxpayer does not have a banking account, they may have to pay a fee to access their refund without a cost-free service like the one that WSECU is offering.”
‘Something We Needed to Do’
Added WSECU Ann Flannigan, VP-public relations with the credit union, in a statement, “When the Department of Revenue reached out to us about providing this service, we knew this was something we needed to do. Some recipients are unbanked or underbanked and using check cashing services will chip away at their refund.”
