WOCCU Remains Global, But Move Across Town Now Complete; Reception Today

MADISON, Wis.–The World Council of Credit Unions and the Worldwide Foundation have officially moved its operations into office space held by the Filene Research Institute in the Lyric building on East Washington Ave. in Madison, Wis.

As CUToday.info reported earlier, the World Council had to move after CUNA Mutual announced changes to its large campus on Mineral Point Rd. in Madison that had been WOCCU’s home. In 2021, CUNA Mutual demolished the circular building called the “International Commons” that had been home to the World Council at one point and has replaced it with a new office building.

As CUToday.info was also first to report, CUNA Mutual said it is “reimagining” the entire office space it occupies, a decision that has also affected CUNA, which is now also looking for new space for its Madison operations. CUNA has been in that space since 1980.

Similarly, the World Council reported that in its 51-year history it has only had two homes, beginning its operations at Filene House in Madison in 1971. In 1979, World Council then moved to the Credit Union Center with CUNA and CUNA Mutual.

‘Rethinking Space’

In announcing completion of the move, the two organizations said the COVID restrictions on physical workplaces and resulting work-from-home arrangements also led to a “rethinking” of their respective spaces.

“Filene has set the standard for credit union research in the United States—much in the same way World Council has set the standard internationally for credit union advocacy, development, education and advancing financial inclusion on a global scale,” said Elissa McCarter LaBorde, WOCCU president and CEO. “Sharing space in our Madison offices puts into practice what we too often only talk about: cooperation among cooperatives is what drives success of the global credit union movement.”

From 4:30– 6:00 p.m. today, Filene and WOCCU are hosting a joint reception and reveal for Filene and WOCCU staff and Wisconsin credit union leaders from organizations that include CUNA, CUNA Mutual Group, Summit Credit Union and UW Credit Union.

“Filene has embraced the hybrid work model because we still find so much value in the in-person ‘accidental collisions’ that happen in the hallways,” said Mark Meyer, Filene CEO. “Welcoming WOCCU into our office space will create invaluable opportunities to advance ideas and create new opportunities jointly for our staff, our organizations and the credit union system.”
