Virginia CU’s Members Hit By Skimmers At Walmart

FREDRICKSBURG, Va.–At least one credit union’s members as well as plastic cardholders from other issuers have been hit by a breach at a local Walmart here.

The Fredericksburg Police Department reported that at least 37 people had their payment cards compromised and financial accounts drained as a result, and that each of the cardholders had used their card at the local Walmart.

"Detectives believe the suspects are obtaining debit/credit card numbers by placing overlay devices on credit card readers at checkout counters. Today, Fredericksburg detectives received information from Walmart Global Investigations that debit/credit cards used at the Central Park Walmart have been compromised," the Fredricksburg Police Department said in a statement.

The police said that an unidentified credit union had reported 37 of its members had been victimized, with ATM withdrawals made using their cards. While the CU wasn’t named, Front Royal FCU has a message scrolling on its website that due to fraud members are limited to purchases of $200 or less on their debit cards.

Authorities believe the cards were compromised in either March or April using skimmers that had been attached to registers in Walmart.
