JACKSONVILLE, Fla.–Extensive and detailed video has been released of a gunman who took hostages inside a branch of Community First Credit Union here in December.
The video, which was released by the State’s Attorney’s Office, shows the gunman putting a pistol to the back of his hostages' heads before eventually being taken down by SWAT team members.
The robbery attempt/hostage standoff lasted two hours before SWAT officers used a battering ram to end the standoff. Police arrested 23-year-old Nicholas Humphrey, who allegedly threatened to kill hostages. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and auto theft and remains in jail without bond.
Police noted that due to a high-tech security system installed inside Community First CU after someone fired a gun inside that same branch 15 years ago, they were able to watch what the gunman was doing during the standoff.
Humphrey’s mother said he suffers from mental illness and has been trying to get him help. He is due back in court on March 23.
The video can be found here.
The credit union’s CEO, John Hirabayashi, spoke with CUToday.info following the incident and shared advice and lessons learned that can be used to benefit other credit unions should they ever face a similar situation. That interview can be found here.
