Via Credit Union Faces Class-Action Lawsuit Over Alleged Data Breach

MARION, Ind.—The $577-million Via Credit Union has been hit with a class-action lawsuit over what appears to be a data breach that occurred at the organization between Jan. 18 and Jan. 20,  Bloomberg Law reported.

Bloomberg Law said the lawsuit alleges the CU negligently failed to protect the personal information of nearly 61,000 people that was exposed in the breach.

As CUToday.info reported, the CU identified suspicious activity within its computer network, leading to an investigation that confirmed a data breach by an unauthorized third party.

Lead plaintiff William Runyan alleged that Via Credit Union breached its duties under common law, contract law, industry standards, and the Federal Trade Commission Act to implement reasonable and adequate data-security measures and provide timely notice of the incident, Bloomberg Law said.

Information exposed in the breach included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, Visa credit-card numbers, and financial-account numbers, according to a complaint filed Thursday, Bloomberg Law said.
