WASHINGTON–It will be a busy day for politics today with five states conducting primaries in which credit unions and their political action committees have invested more than $169,000 on 31 candidates.
The primaries are taking place in Idaho, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oregon and Pennsylvania.
According to Trey Hawkins, deputy chief advocacy officer for political action, the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and respective state league PACs are spending money on a number of “particularly competitive” races. Those races include:
- Idaho second district. Credit unions are backing incumbent Rep. Mike Simpson (R) with the “maximum” donation.
- Kentucky third district. Rep. John Yarmuth (D) is retiring. Credit unions are supporting Kentucky State Sen. Morgan McGarvey in the primary.
- North Carolina fourth district. In this heavily Democratic district in which Rep. David Price is retiring, CULAC and North Carolina’s CUs are backing State Sen. Valerie Foushee. (Among the candidates in this primary is Clay Aiken, the former American Idol contestant.)
- North Carolina 11th district. CULAC and the state’s CUs are backing a challenger to current Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn, State Sen. Chuck Edwards. “He has a background in business and financial services. He has been an ally in the North Carolina General Assembly. Our estimation is he would be a better candidate for credit unions,” said Hawkins.
- North Carolina 14th district. This is a new district, meaning the seat is open. Credit unions have thrown their support behind State Sen. Jeff Jackson in the Democratic primary.
Hawkins reminded that all of the North Carolina races have the potential for a runoff if the candidate does not win a plurality of votes. Any runoff would occur in June.
- Oregon fourth district. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D) has opted not to run for reelection. Credit unions are supporting Oregon Commissioner of Labor and Industries Val Hoyle for the seat.
- Oregon fifth district. Rep. Kurt Schrader is (D) is in what Hawkins called a “highly competitive” primary race. “Rep. Shrader has been extremely helpful to credit unions and we want to be extremely helpful to him,” said Hawkins.
- Pennsylvania 18th district. Rep. Michal Doyle (D) is retiring. Keystone State credit unions are supporting Mike Irwin in the Democratic primary.
