VP Candidate Kaine Talks Housing Issue

Tim Kaine

WASHINGTON–While it has been a relatively low-profile issue to date in the presidential campaign, Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine has highlighted housing in several recent remarks.

Kaine has been active in housing issues throughout much of his professional and political career, first working as a lawyer in Richmond, Va., and pursuing fair-housing cases, and then keeping housing front and center while mayor of that city and as governor of Virginia.

In an editorial published on CNN.com, Kaine said,  “A house is more than just a place to sleep. It's part of the foundation on which a family can build a life. Where you live determines the jobs you can find, the schools your children can attend, the air you breathe, and the opportunities you have. And when you are blocked from living where you want, it cuts to the core of who you are.”

Kaine said a Clinton Administration would work to make housing fairer and more affordable, including a focus on low-income housing tax credits, rental assistance, more resources for public housing, and help for first-time homebuyers.

All of that, of course, is largely dependent on what happens with the makeup of Congress as a result of the elections.
