Up To $1.7 Million May Be Missing From $10M Virginia CU

LYNCHBURG, Va.—Authorities are now saying that as much as $1.7-million is missing from the $10.4-million Centra Health Credit Union here following an investigation that began in late 2014.

In early January, the credit union placed a branch manager and two employees on unpaid administrative leave while the investigation was being conducted. The FBI, the Secret Service, NCUA and Virginia’s Bureau of Financial Institutions are all involved. The problems were discovered during an examination by the state and federal regulator.

The News & Advance said that a search warrant affidavit that was unsealed said that a search of the Forest, Va., home of Claudia Rawes, branch manager of Central Health’s location in inside Lynchburg General Hospital, has been conducted.

The credit union has a message on its website to members informing them of the investigation, including regulators’ concerns of “apparent non-adherence to policies and procedures,” as well as the leave affecting the three employees.

“As always, the credit union will mail end-of-year statements to each member within the next week, and we ask that members closely review their statements and confirm that their account activity is accurately reflected on the statement,” the online message reads.
