United Community CU Breaks Ground on New Headquarters

QUINCY, Ill. — United Community Credit Union has broken ground on a new headquarters.

“We have grown over the last 10 years especially,” CEO Sarah Distin told WHIG. “Ever since COVID, people have really turned to local financing. We’ve poured our energy back into the community and I think those two things together have allowed us (this). But there are also some growing pains and space is one of those. We need just a little bit more space and we need to use that space better than we have in the past.”

The $120.4-million UCCU told the news outlet the building will help to modernize its services with improved technology, allowing it to take deposits at all hours of the night; provide a more central location for members’ convenience and create a larger facility that will offer a wider range of hours by consolidating some of the credit union’s branch offices into one location.

‘A Central Location’

“We’ll have a three-lane drive-thru including a drive-up ATM, so we should be able to accommodate more people more quickly at the new location,” Dustin told WHIG. “It was really important for us to find a central location in the city that would accommodate a smooth flow of traffic. We didn’t want people coming in and then not being able to get out onto a busy road … (but) we also wanted to be somewhere recognizable, not hidden at the edge of town. I think we’re going to accomplish that at this new location — (it’s) right in the heart of the city where everybody is doing their shopping and eating.”

Additional Benefits

UCCU said the new headquarters will also ease staffing issues and help it to eliminate redundancies and communication issues by subsuming the 3633 Maine and 1426 N. 26th St branches into one building.
