MADISON, Wis.–The labor union that is currently at an impasse with CUNA Mutual said it was invited to a speech given by President Biden after it communicated with the White House over those negotiations. It has also now filed a claim with the National Labor Relations Board.
The president spoke at the LiUNA Training Center in DeForest, Wis., with remarks centered on the “importance of quality, union jobs.”
As CUToday.info reported earlier, Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 39, which represents approximately 450 CUNA Mutual employees, said it has been negotiating with CUNA Mutual Group for more than a year over a new contract.
The union said on Feb. 8 it filed an unfair labor practice (ULP) claims against CUNA Mutual Group with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging the company has broken federal law.
The Allegations
According to OPEIU Local 39, the complaint alleges:
- Failure to respond to information requests related to bargaining
- Failure to provide a counter proposal in a reasonable amount of time
- Ending the established practice of covering Union employee wages while bargaining during the workday, after doing so throughout 2022
- Retaliation by withholding the bonuses and discretionary adjustments of bargaining unit employees without cause
Could be ‘Resolved’
“Each charge described above could be resolved immediately by our Employer and would help return bargaining to a more productive relationship,” said a letter sent to union members Chief Steward Joe Evica. “Our team is confident that if the employer is willing to resolve the issues described, we can still effectively reach a mutual agreement which resolves open issues surrounding fair wages, job security, our pension, and other important items. We sincerely hope that CUNA Mutual Group takes this as an invitation to correct their mistakes and work with us towards a fair settlement.”
As CUToday.info also reported, the union has outlined its position in a letter sent to more than 7,000 credit union leaders across the country. The letter suggests that service from CUNA Mutual may be interrupted if a new contract agreement can’t be reached.
CUNA Mutual Response
In an earlier statement to CUToday.info, CUNA Mutual said it “continues to be committed to reaching a fair and competitive agreement with OPEIU Local 39. We aim to provide a compensation package that addresses the key issues the union has outlined. As we continue to meet with the union and work toward a resolution, we are also focused on keeping our operations running for those we serve and we have plans in place to ensure we can do so. We respect the collective bargaining process. As a result, we don't anticipate making any further public comments.”
