Underground Collision Coverage: One Time Not to Use The Golden Rule

HENDERSON, Nev.–Emotional intelligence is a key component of diversity, equity and inclusion, and when it’s lacking, DEI often fails. But one person offered some suggestions on how to effectively use emotional intelligence to make a difference.

Brandi Stankovic, left, and Sue Mitchell, hosts of the virtual Underground Collision.

“Emotional intelligence relies on communication,” said Brandi Stankovic, chief strategy officer with CU Solutions Group, during the first-ever virtual edition of the Underground Collision hosted by Mitchell, Stankovic & Associates. “My biggest fear is that declarations of support don’t move beyond talk and behavior modification.”

Stankovic said some of the “self-congratulatory stuff” many credit unions brag about when it comes to DEI can often be “almost offensive.”

To think about DEI, Stankovic urged credit unions  to think in terms of learning a new language. She said she often hears people state they don’t know what to do or say, and are particularly worried about saying the wrong thing.

To that end, Stankovic offered this advice for learning DEI:

Lessons for Learners

  • Establish a feedback loop. “Listening is really critical. It’s much like someone learning a new language. If you’re uncomfortable, share that.”
  • Practice cultural sensitivity. “Don’t be color blind. Don’t use the Golden Rule. Learn about what others want so you can do unto them how they want to be done  unto.”
  • Learn Pronouns. “Pronouns can be an inherent part of your language, but it might feel uncomfortable to shift the language you are used to. But it’s an important way to learn respect for another’s gender identity.”

Lessons for the Teachers/Preachers of DEI

  • Create a safe environment for mistakes. To ask questions, people have to have a safe environment, said Stankovic. “Give people time to grow without judgement,” she said.
  • Refrain from sarcasm and the use of slang. Things can be lost in translation.
  • Don’t over-correct. “Imagine if you were working with a little kid. We have to be more patient and use positive reinforcement.”

“When it comes to DEI, give people a chance,” advised Stankovic. “Give them a chance to fail and to learn. Be careful with appropriation. Ask questions and learn effective ways to show appreciation.”
