Ukrainian Families Now Being Helped, as Polish CU Leader Offers Update on New Fund

SOPOT, Poland–One week after the creation of the Polish American Credit Union Support Fund, more than $62,000 has been donated by U.S. credit unions to help CUs in Poland assist the flood of Ukrainian refugees who have entered the country seeking safety.

According to Rafal Matusiak, president & CEO of Poland’s trade association, the National Association of Credit and Savings Unions (NACSCU), the fund continues to accept donations here.

As CUToday.info was first to report, the fund was created after Brian Branch, the former CEO of the World Council of Credit Unions, and Bruce Foulke, president and CEO of American Heritage FCU in Pennsylvania, traveled to Poland to get an “on the ground” look at how American CUs might best respond.

In the country the two men found credit unions seeking to fill a long list of assistance required by those seeking shelter in the country, including housing refugees in CU employees’ homes, while CU branches in the country have been acting as distribution points for much-needed supplies, information and financial assistance.

Housing Obtained

During an earlier webcast from Poland with CUs in the U.S. and CUToday.info, Matusiak introduced several families who had fled Ukraine and who were in Lublin, Poland and being assisted by Chmielewski Credit Union. Matusiak said some of the funding has now been used to assist the families in obtaining housing as they also look for work.

“One of these mothers arrived in Poland pregnant and this past week gave birth. Your support has ensured that this baby will have a safe home in this time of crisis,” wrote Matusiak in the update on the fund.

Matusiak said he and others in Poland’s CU community have also met with the Consul of Ukraine, who requested help with medical stretchers, bandages, sleeping mats, binoculars, flashlights and more.

“In Poland we call credit unions “Skoks,” which in Polish means ‘to jump’,” Matusiak  stated. “We have shared the news of our American partnership with all credit unions or Skoks in Poland and asked them to report their priority needs is supporting Ukrainian refugees.”
