U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell Will Not Run For Reelection In 2026

WASHINGTON—Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Thursday that he will not run for re-election in 2026.

McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, announced on his 83rd birthday that he will not seek another term in Kentucky and will retire at the end of his current term. Before delivering a speech on the Senate floor, he shared his decision with The Associated Press, according to the AP.

First elected in 1984, McConnell is the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history. He stepped down from the leadership role last year.
