COLUMBUS, Ohio–Two credit union leaders in Ohio have been honored for their contributions. Both people were recognized during InVest48, the Ohio Credit Union League’s annual convention, at which more than 300 credit union leaders were in attendance.
While attending the convention, credit unions discussed growth and success strategies to better serve more than three million Ohioans, heard from influential industry thought leaders, and celebrated philosophically minded individuals making an impact within local communities.
Honored by the league were:
The Louise McCarren Herring Movement Advancement Award: Dennis Adams
The Louise McCarren Herring Movement Advancement Award recognizes excellence in philosophy and long-lasting movement contribution and those who have made an “indelible mark” in advancing the credit union movement in and beyond Ohio are eligible for nomination.
This year’s award recipient is Dennis Adams, the just-retired president and CEO of American Shared Insurance (ASI) and Excess Share Insurance (ESI).
“When Mr. Adams joined ASI, it was one of a dozen private deposit insurers in existence in the U.S., with total assets of less than $40 million,” the league stated. “Today, ASI is the country’s sole private, non-federal, deposit insurer, providing both primary share and deposit insurance and excess deposit insurance only to credit unions. ASI’s total consolidated assets soared to nearly $400 million, approximately 10 times its size from when Mr. Adams joined the company.”
Claude Clarke Advocacy Impact Award: Barry Shaner
The Claude Clarke Advocacy Impact Award celebrates the leadership of a credit union employee or volunteer for exceptional belief, dedication, and impact with regards to continued advocacy on behalf of the credit union movement.
“This year’s award recipient is Barry Shaner, CEO of Directions Credit Union. Mr. Shaner has testified before Statehouse Committees on various credit union priorities, held and attended state and federal legislative meetings, and regularly participates in Washington, D.C., hill hikes,” the OCUL said. “He has submitted comment letters, calls-to-action, and provided expert feedback on behalf of Directions Credit Union directly to decision-makers to influence a positive outcome for the Ohio credit union movement. He served as chairman of the Government Affairs Committee of the Ohio Credit Union League for almost a decade and took it to new heights. With Mr. Shaner’s leadership Directions Credit Union remains in the top five contributing credit unions when it comes to PAC investment.”
