Two Massachusetts Credit Unions Announce Merger Plans

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass.–West Springfield FCU here said it is merging into Freedom Credit Union in Springfield, Mass.

Chartered in 1960 as West Springfield Municipal Employees CU, it changed its name in 2003. It has $29.3-million in assets and approximately 3,000 members.

The $491-million Freedom Credit Union has approximately 28,000 members. It was chartered in 1922 as Western Massachusetts Telephone Workers CU before changing its name in 2004.

"This is a tremendous opportunity to extend our products and services to West Springfield, an area where we do not have a branch but where many of our members live and work," said Glenn Welch, president and CEO of Freedom Credit Union, in a statement. "We promise our members accessibility to us, whether it's at a branch location or through mobile banking. This merger delivers on that promise."

All eight employees of West Springfield Federal Credit Union will work for Freedom Credit Union, the credit union said. The combined CU will have 11 branches.
