Two Former CU Employees Allege Violation Of Civil Rights Act

HOUSTON—Two former employees of Plus4 Credit Union who are African-American have filed suit against the credit union alleging wrongful termination.

Emma Donald and Christopher Lee filed a lawsuit in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas alleging the credit union violated the Civil Rights Act.

The plaintiffs’ complaint alleges that Donald was hired in 2012 as the human resources manager and that during her time at Plus4 she was treated in a discriminatory way. The allegations include that as an African-American woman she was singled out and even ordered by the defendant to refrain from hiring black or Hispanic employees.

The lawsuit alleges that after Lee was hired a supervisor ordered Donald to fire Lee, alleging it was due to the plaintiff's dreadlocks. In the suit Donald alleges she was later retaliated against and terminated due to her refusal to fire Lee.

Donald and Lee are seeking damages of back and front pay, mental and emotional distress, costs of suit and legal fees. Lionel Martin and Melissa Garcia-Martin of Garcia Martin & Martin PC in Sugar Land are representing the plaintiffs.
