Two Florida CUs Announce Programs to Help Hurricane Ian Victims

DUNEDIN, Fla.–Two Florida credit unions have introduced new programs to help survivors  of Hurricane Ian, which caused widespread damage in Southwestern Florida, especially in the Fort Myers market.

According to the Achieva Credit Union, its Achieva Foundation has started a dollar-for-dollar match to double the impact of those who give, while Space Coast CU has announced a partnership with the American Red Cross.

“Every dollar donated through this program will provide twice the impact on victims of the storm, meaning twice the amount of water, gasoline, generators and other essential supplies to those who need it most,” Achieva said.

ACI noted it has multiple branches with more than 70 employees in Charlotte and Lee Counties.

“These people, their homes, and their families have been devastated by this natural disaster. The day following the storm the CEO, dozens of employees and directors of branches located around Pinellas County and Tampa began the first of multiple trips to help fellow employees, coworkers, and the general public in need,” Achieva CU stated.

3 Branches Still Closed

The credit union’s website shows three of its branches remain closed, while four are operating with limited hours.

“Hurricane Ian had a major impact on our community and many of our neighbors find themselves in need,” said President and CEO Gary Regoli. “We’re calling on the public to join us as we come together and help increase our impact.”

Achieva Credit Union said it is also offering a “Skip-a-Pay” option and providing an Assistance Relief Loan for those members needing additional support.

“The culture that is created in our organization is amazing. Community is what we do here,” said Tasha Cohen-Glynn, marketing and public relations manager. “This is the difference between banks and credit unions. To do good is at the root of who we are.”

Space Coast CU Partners With Red Cross

Separately, Space Coast Credit Union, which is also offering hurricane relief loans to its members, said it has partnered with the American Red Cross to support victims. Members can make a donation at any SCCU branch.

“No donation is too small or too large,” Space Coast said on its website. “100% of all donations will be compiled and sent to the Red Cross on our members’ and friends’ behalf.”

In addition, SCCU said it is also donating $25,000 to the American Red Cross and its employees will be able to make donations through payroll deduction. Space Coast said it will match all employee donations.
