DENVER–Two credit unions have named new leadership.
In Colorado, the $2-billion Westerra Credit Union has selected Steven Schmidle as its new CEO. Schmidle had been serving as acting president and CEO for the past several months.
“During this time Schmidle has demonstrated remarkable leadership, dedication and a profound commitment to Westerra’s mission,” the credit union said. “The transition is a natural and positive step, reflecting a strategic move to navigate the organization through today’s challenging financial landscape, while preserving the institution's commitment to its members and the community.”
Two Decades of Experience
Schmidle joined Westerra in 2019 as CFO and has more than 20 years’ experience in financial, operational, and strategic leadership positions within financial institutions, the credit union said.
“His elevation to the position of CEO is a natural progression that aligns with the institution's vision for the future,” according to Westerra.
"I am deeply honored to be appointed by the board of directors to the position of president and chief executive officer of Westerra Credit Union,” said Schmidle. “We have a proud history approaching 90 years in length, and I am fully committed to strengthening that legacy. Together, with our dedicated team, we will not only navigate the current financial landscape but also innovate and create new opportunities for our members to thrive.”
Passion for Service
Westerra said Schmidle is known not only for his financial acumen, but also for his genuine passion for member service and community involvement, which will remain at the core of Westerra's operations under his leadership.
WCU has approximately 123,000 members.
New CEO at IBEW 26
Separately, in Lanham, Md., the $31.1-million IBEW 26 FCU has named Joshua Urbick as its new CEO, succeeding Doreen Creamer Cleland, who is retiring.
Urbick brings nearly a decade of financial services experience to his new position, serving in various roles at Global Credit Union after getting his professional start at Banner Bank, the credit union reported.
He has also served as chairman of the board for the Hayden Chamber of Commerce and president of the North Idaho Chapter of NWCUA.
Urbick completed a four-year degree in Theology/Theological Studies at Global University and holds several professional licenses and certifications, including his Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor (CCUFC) designation from CUNA.
A ‘Deep Honor’
“Joining IBEW 26 FCU and carrying on the rich legacy that Doreen Creamer Cleland and her family have created is a deep honor,” said Urbick. “This is not merely about continuing a legacy but sculpting this cooperative’s future proactively and respectfully. I eagerly anticipate working with the board and engaging in a fruitful collaboration with our fantastic team. Our goal is to persistently steer the credit union on an upward trajectory, as we delicately maneuver through the economic complexities of our time.”
