WASHINGTON–Credit unions are watching several hearings and pieces of legislation in Congress this week in addition to President Trump’s State of the Union address tonight.
Among the legislation that has the attention of CUNA, according to Deputy Chief Advocacy Officer Eli Joseph:
- HR 2474, the Protecting the Right to Organize Act of 2019
- HR 5687, the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief and Puerto Rico Disaster Tax Relief of 2020
While the Senate schedule remains in flux due to the impeachment-related issues, credit unions are watching hearings:
- On Wednesday, the House Financial Services Committee will hold a hearing titled “Rent-a-Bank Schemes and New Debt Traps: Assessing Efforts to Evade State Consumer Protections and Interest Rate Caps”
- On Thursday, the same committee will hear from CFPB Director Kathy Kraninger as part of its semi-annual review of that agency.
- Also on Thursday, NAFCU said it will be paying attention to a Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hearing titled, “Fake it Till They Make It: How Bad Actors Use Astroturfing to Manipulate Regulators, Disenfranchise Consumers and Subvert the Rulemaking Process”
Giving Back at GAC
Separately, CUNA said it will once again be hosting a give-back event during its upcoming GAC, in conjunction with Fiserv. Attendees will be able to put together teddy bears and inspirational cards to be distributed to children of military personnel as part of Operation Gratitude. Attendees will also be helping to pack healthy foods for local schools.
