Twelve People At Navy Federal Branch Sent To Hospital

ODENTON, Md.—Twelve people at a branch of Navy FCU here were taken to area hospitals as the result of what is believed to be carbon monoxide poisoning.

Anne Arundel County Fire officials firefighters responded to the Navy Federal Credit Union branch at 1179 Annapolis Road sometime after 8 a.m. for a report of workers experiencing symptoms associated with carbon monoxide poisoning, according to CBS Baltimore.

The news outlet reported that construction crews said around 5 a.m. had been using a propane-powered saw for about two to three hours in the building.

Some of the workers started to feel ill and they called 911, according to CBS Baltimore.

Firefighters identified carbon monoxide levels as high as 850 parts per million inside the building, according to officials. Carbon monoxide levels above 800 parts per million can cause headache, nausea, and dizziness after 45 minutes, collapse and unconsciousness after one hour and death within two-to-three hours.

Six people were taken to Shock Trauma to be treated in their hyperbaric chamber, while six others were taken to University of Maryland Medical Center to treat various symptoms, CBS Baltimore said.

The victims were 11 men and one woman, ranging in ages from 22 years old to 55 years old.

Anne Arundel County Fire officials helped to ventilate the building, which was eventually deemed to be safe to reenter.
