WASHINGTON--The Trump Administration has rejected Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook’s claim that her dismissal would be unlawful, telling the U.S. Supreme Court that the President’s attempt to remove her falls within his authority, Reuters reported.
Reuters pointed out that in limiting a president's power to remove a Fed governor only for "cause," U.S. Solicitor General John Sauer wrote, "Congress otherwise respected the President's constitutional authority over principal officers of the United States by declining to limit him to specific causes or specific removal procedures."
Cook filed suit after President Trump announced last month that he would remove her, citing allegations of mortgage fraud that she has denied. She argues the accusations do not provide legal grounds for dismissal and were merely a pretext to oust her over her views on monetary policy, Reuters said.
