Tropical Storm Harvey Coverage: Louisiana’s CUs Now ‘Hunkering Down’

HARAHAN, La.—With CUs in Texas still assessing damage, Tropical Storm Harvey is expected to deliver a tougher punch in round two in this state, according to the Louisiana CU League, which told CUToday.info that credit unions here are “hunkering down.”

In preparation for Tropical Storm Harvey to hit land for a second time in Louisiana and sweep across southern portions of the state, Lacey Weaver, VP of communications and PR for the league, said credit unions are preparing their staff, members and branches for this storm.

As far as its intensity, Weaver said forecasts predict the impact will be worse than when Harvey hit land in Louisiana over the weekend.

“But all we can really say about things is it’s wait and see right now. The storm is expected to roll in tonight and tomorrow,” said Weaver Tuesday afternoon.

Weaver said some credit unions in this state closed on Monday and that most others were closing Tuesday. No credit unions expected to be in Harvey’s path were planning on opening Wednesday, she said.

Weaver said most of the flooding from Harvey’s initial strike impacted the Lake Charles area, but no credit unions closed then. However, some staff members had difficulty getting to their jobs due to flooded roads.

“Reports say that some homes in Lake Charles are now taking on water,” said Weaver about the city that is three hours from New Orleans. “Again, this is wait and see.”
