Tropical Storm Harvey Coverage: CUNA Mutual Receiving Claims, Providing Support

MADISON, Wis.—Claims from credit unions in the path of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey are already being received by CUNA Mutual Group, which is also taking steps to support those impacted by the storm.

CUNA Mutual Group said it activated its Customer Disaster Response Team in advance of Hurricane Harvey making landfall, and has initiated its post-response protocols.

“We continue to monitor this ongoing storm very closely and are well positioned and prepared to respond swiftly for our customers at any time,” the company said. “We will deploy claims professionals to Texas this week, if possible, covering all coastal and inland areas from Corpus Christi up through Houston/Liberty.”

The company said it is continuing efforts to contact all of its credit union customers impacted by Harvey.

“Our efforts on this front will continue until each and every customer has heard from our Customer Disaster Response Team,” CUNA Mutual Group explained. “We identified approximately 200 credit unions in and around the coastal areas of Texas and our team has been making outbound calls, as well as communicating via a mass email with information related to the storm and contact phone numbers.”

CUNA Mutual Group said that as of Tuesday evening it had received 23 claims, none “catastrophic.”

“We anticipate claims volume and severity to increase in the coming days, as credit unions are able to access their branches. Types of perils we typically cover in these events include wind, hail, flood for data processing equipment, ATMs and valuable information; power outages/surges, and lightning,” the company said.

“We have communicated with the Cornerstone Credit Union League, as well as league disaster teams, and NCUA, and will remain in close contact with them over the next several days,” CUNA Mutual explained.

Mass communication was sent to all policyholders identified, which includes hurricane and contact info for CUNA Mutual Group claims professionals.

“We are prepared to have CUNA Mutual Group teams on the ground this week and additional resources were allocated Tuesday morning in order to assist with a swift pre-catastrophe response, due to the high number of customers in the coastal areas of Texas,” the company said. “Many customers cannot access their locations.”

CUNA Mutual Group said that its Fort Worth claims call center remains on high alert and all calls received regarding Harvey are being handled on a priority basis.
