Trade Groups Urge Focus On Home Districts With Congress in Recess

WASHINGTON–With Congress in recess both NAFCU and CUNA are urging credit unions to meet with their representatives in their home districts.

The House is out through Sept. 4, and the Senate will be in session for only a short time during August.

It’s been a very successful year for credit union advocacy, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to stop our advocacy,” said Eli Joseph, chief advocacy officer for congressional relations at CUNA. “We encourage folks to take time to meet with their local elected officials.”

Richard Gose, CUNA’s chief political officer, said data breaches are among the issues on which CUNA is encouraging credit unions to talk to their representatives about. “It’s time to weigh in. Whether we get actual legislation this year or we are just preparing for the next Congress it’s good to get our footprint on this issue and talk about why credit unions need this to protect members.”

With representatives at home, NAFCU said it is urging its members to use its Grassroots Action Center for contact information for lawmakers and other information.
