Tom Sakash, Leader of America’s CU’s Small Credit Union Initiatives, Departs; Indicates He Will Remain in Credit Unions

MADISON, Wis.–Tom Sakash, manager of Small Credit Union Initiatives at America’s Credit Unions, has departed the organization.

CUToday.info has made multiple inquiries to the trade group related to whether Sakash’s departure is part of the broader layoffs being announced following the merger of CUNA and NAFCU, or whether the Small Credit Union Initiatives function has been eliminated entirely, but America’s Credit Unions has not yet responded.

Tom Sakash

The Small Credit Unions Initiative was part of CUNA prior to the merger.

In a lengthy post on LinkedIn, Sakash said he is moving on to “not one, but two exciting roles in the credit union industry” that he will announce in coming weeks, and indicated in the post that he had made the decision to leave the organization.

He further indicated in his post that he will remain involved in related work.

Sakash had been with CUNA/America’s Credit Unions for a decade.

‘Loved This Work’

“You might have guessed by now, I really loved this work. I loved the credit unions I worked with and their leaders; individuals who have the brilliance to run complex, highly regulated financial institutions, but also the heart to leverage their finite resources for the greatest possible good,” he wrote. “I loved learning from these folks how to be a leader, what real work ethic looks like, what a successful business looks like. And I loved being in the position at the national association to look down at the industry gameboard, see each of the pieces, and figure out what position to place them in to optimize our impact on the health of small credit unions across the country.

‘Growing Day by Day’

“I said this to the Small Credit Union Committee this week during our last meeting together, but I believe in my heart of hearts that the trajectory of small credit unions changed over these past few years, and that their future relevance is now, in fact, growing by the day,” he added.
