Together CU Nets New Partnership With Soccer Team’s Goalkeeper

ST. LOUIS–Together Credit Union has entered into a partnership with Roman Bürki, the goalkeeper and first-ever captain for Major League Soccer’s St. Louis CITY SC.

According to the credit union, the multi-year deal follows the successful launch of Saves for Savings, which provides a $300 savings account for a local student for every save by CITY SC during the 2023 regular season.

Roman Bürki

Bürki will donate a significant portion of his partnership agreement to expanding Saves for Savings financial education opportunities for students and use his resources to growing financial wellness outreach in the Greater St. Louis Metropolitan Area, Together CU said.

“St. Louis has been good to me, and I am thankful for the support of our fans.  I want to give back to show my appreciation, and help our community,” said Burkl, who has six clean sheets with CITY SC, and achieved 82 saves in the last 21 matches.

Long History in the Game

Bürki joined St. Louis on July 1, 2022, after seven years with one of the top Bundesliga clubs, Borussia Dortmund. The team noted the Swiss goalkeeper took over the number-one spot from Dortmund’s legendary goalkeeper, Roman Weidenfeller, before the 2015-16 season, and went on to amass 176 matches and 60 clean sheets in Bundesliga play and 33 matches with 12 clean sheets in UEFA Champions League during his time at Dortmund.

Bürki was born in Münsingen, Switzerland, and played for BSC Young Boys, one of the most successful Swiss football clubs, before joining FC Thun in 2009 and Schaffhausen in 2010. The following season, he joined fellow Swiss Super League club Grasshopper Club Zürich on loan and after his impressive performances was signed permanently by the club.

In 2013, he helped the club to their 19th Swiss Cup championship, after beating defending champions FC Basel in a penalty shootout, according to team.

Bürki has also represented the Switzerland National Team at various levels, making a total of 30 appearances. He most recently made two starts in two international friendlies ahead of the 2018 World Cup. Burki backed up Yann Sommer during the 2018 World Cup when Switzerland made it through the Group Stage to the Quarterfinals.

Burki, who is in his first MLS season, leads the league in saves and was recently voted to the 2023 All Star Roster.

‘Incredible Role Model’

“Bürki is an incredible role model and athlete, and through our partnership we hope to help more youth and their families achieve their financial goals,” said Tom Kraus, TCU’s COO. “Because of him, Together Credit Union is donating $24,600 in savings for St. Louis students.”

In July 2021, the $2.4-billion Together Credit Union entered into an agreement making it a Founding Partner and the Official Banking Partner of St. Louis CITY Soccer Club. Since that time, Together Credit Union and St. Louis CITY SC have announced Soccer for Our CITY, which provides eligible youth the opportunity to participate in Gateway YMCA’s soccer program at a reduced cost; launched Saves for Savings and Zogo, a financial wellness app that includes 700+ bite-sized, action-based lessons on various financial wellness topics; and introduced the official CITY SC VISA credit and debit cards.
