‘Things About to Get Heated Again’ in D.C., Says CUNA Hill Advocate; Fed Gov’t Funding Again Set to Run Out

WASHINGTON–The Senate is back and session and the House is set to return next week, meaning “things are getting heated again” in Washington, according to one person with CUNA.

Jason Stverak

Most of the attention, however, will be going to what is an ongoing issue before Congress, passing legislation to fund the federal government. Currently, federal funding is set to run out on Sept. 30, noted Jason Stverak, deputy chief advocacy officer for federal government affairs with CUNA. Stverak said he expects a temporary continuing resolution will be passed by Congress that will provide funding through a date in December, which would come after the November mid-term elections.

But that still involves all the uncertainty over what is and what is not included in the temporary continuing resolution, he said, adding it’s “fingers crossed” they get that done.

Among the biggest funding needs that everyone will be watching is the National Flood Insurance Program, said Stverak, funding for which is also set to expire on Sept. 30.

“We hope that we don’t hit that deadline without its continuation,” he added.

CU Delegations Head to Hill

In the meantime, Stverak said CUNA and its state affiliates will be part of a “very busy month in terms of advocacy” in Washington, with multiple delegations set to visit D.C. In all, he said close to two-dozen state leagues representing 30 states will be in the capital over the next three weeks.

“Our efforts are going to be ramped up on the interchange issue,” Stverak said of a proposed bill that would expand the payments options available to merchants. We will again be hitting the Hill to express our extreme disappointment in the bill…and continually educating offices on opposing the legislation.”

Credit unions will also be pushing to advance the board modernization bill that is before the House and Senate in various stages.
