Thieves Try to Use 1 of 8 Stolen Trucks to Smash Into Credit Union

FLINT, Mich.–Thieves who stole eight brand-new Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks from a car dealer here also crashed one into a branch of Sovita Credit Union here as part of a robbery attempt.

Police said trucks were stolen from a secured overflow parking lot where they were awaiting shipment to a dealer around 6 a.m. Sunday.  A witness reported seeing the line of trucks driving down South Grand Traverse Street and called 911, according to WJRT. Just a few moments later, the OnStar system on one of the trucks called the Genesee County 911 Communications Center to report a crash at the Sovita Credit Union in Flint Township, Mich., according to the news outlet.

Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser told WJRT the truck thieves slammed one of them into the building, trying to steal a safe inside. That truck was heavily damaged and was left at the scene.

The suspects had fled the Sovita Credit Union branch before Flint Township police arrived, Kaiser said.

OnStar Reveals Location

According to Michigan State Police and other law enforcement agencies, the six stolen trucks were found sitting near the school with their engines running.

Suspects started running away from the trucks on foot and on bicycles when police arrived. Police arrested two of them, but several other suspects remain at large, WJRT reported.
