Thieves Attempt to Steal, Break Into Two of CU’s ATMs

KENNEDY TOWNSHIP, Penn.–Two people attempted to remove an ATM at a branch of Clearview FCU here and drive it away.

The crime occurred at approximately 4 a.m. with police saying the suspects were driving a white van.

“The good news is no one was injured and all money is saved. As of now, it’s in the hands of local authorities and we’re working closely with them,” Clearview FCU Spokesperson Erin Forrester told WPXI.

Van Recovered

According to the report, Kennedy Township police spent several hours combing the scene for any evidence left behind by the suspects. The van was left on scene, along with the ATM. At some point, the suspects decided to flee, the report noted.

The attempted theft temporarily shut down business in the drive-thru.

According to police, the van towed from the scene belongs to a church in Stowe Township, Penn., and police are contacting the church to see if it was stolen.

Earlier, shortly after 1:30 a.m., police say someone also tried to open the ATM at a Clearview branch in Moon Township, WPXI reported.

Trend Diminishes

The reports are the first in a while of thieves attempting to steal ATMs. As CUToday.info reported earlier, for a period of time there were a rash of such thefts and attempted thefts, with numerous ATMs and drive-through facilities damage in the attempts that, in some cases involved heavy construction equipment.
