Texas CU Employee Helps Raise $14,000 For Police Officers

FORT WORTH, Texas–Melissa Burleson, the business development coordinator for Tarrant County's Credit Union here, along with other credit unions helped to raise $14,000 for Dallas police officers.

The funds were raised as part of Burleson’s Credit Union Development Educator project. During July, the focus of Burleson's project was democratic member control, number two in the lineup of the Seven Cooperative Principles for credit unions. At each TCCU branch, the Seven Cooperative Principles poster was displayed for visiting members, along with the video created by the National Credit Union Foundation and Corporate One, according to the Cornerstone CU League.

TCCU and other credit unions in the Fort Worth Chapter of Credit Unions were given the opportunity to participate in the Rockin’ for Unity event held at the Rock Wood Fired Kitchen, in Arlington, Texas. This event was held to raise funds for the Assist the Officer Foundation in tribute to the five Dallas Police Officers who were killed earlier this year.

Credit unions in the Fort Worth Chapter collaborated and collected funds to purchase “Back the Blue” branded decals that were sold at the Rockin’ for Unity event. In addition to purchasing the branded decals, staff from TCCU and Guardian First Federal Credit Union volunteered more than 65 hours working the event, which included selling t-shirts and decals, collecting donations, selling raffle tickets and manning a raffle item table, the Cornerstone league reported.

The Rock Wood Fired Kitchen donated 25% of business sales for the day. In the end, credit unions were able to present a check to the Assist the Officer Foundation for more than $14,000.
