Texas CU Commissioner Harold Feeney to Retire

AUSTIN, Texas–Harold Feeney, the Credit Union Commissioner of Texas who has long been active in state credit union regulation, has announced that he will retire at the end of 2018. He has served as commissioner in Texas for 23 years.

During Feeney's tenure as the chief regulator of credit unions in Texas, he successfully led the agency through two sunset reviews by the Texas legislature, and private share insurance was reauthorized at the Credit Union Commission, noted the Cornerstone Credit Union League.

Prior to moving to Texas, Feeney was the state regulator in Kansas.

"Harold Feeney has done a tremendous job leading TCUD, and the credit union system and people of Texas have been well served by this distinguished gentleman,” said CCUL President/CEO Caroline Willard.

The Cornerstone league reported numerous federal credit unions have converted to a Texas state charter during Feeney's time at the helm of TCUD.

“Under Feeney, the Texas Credit Union Department overcame a 63% turnover rate of the examiner force, and the Texas Legislature granted TCUD the prestigious self-directed, semi-independent agency status, which makes TCUD one of only eight state agencies empowered to have its budget set by the Commission,” said the CCUL.

The Texas Credit Union League oversees 185 state-chartered credit unions, second in number only to Illinois.

The Credit Union Commission said it will begin a nationwide search for Feeney’s replacement.
