ALEXANDRIA, Va.–Tanya Otsuka has officially been sworn in as a member of the NCUA board.
In replacing former board member and chairman Rodney Hood, Otsuka gives the board a 2-1 Democratic majority. She was sworn in by NCUA Chairman Todd Harper during a private ceremony.
As CUToday.info reported earlier, the Senate voted in December to confirm Otsuka to serve on the board after having previously served as senior counsel for the Senate Banking Committee. She was nominted for the post in September of 2023 by President Biden.
'Honor of a Lifetime'
“As a career public servant, it was the honor of a lifetime to be nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the U.S. Senate for this important role,” said Otsuka in a statement following the swearing-in. “I look forward to serving with Chairman Harper and Vice Chairman (Kyle) Hauptman to ensure a fair, competitive, and resilient credit union system and am committed to the millions of credit union members who rely on the NCUA to safeguard their hard-earned money.”
Otsuka will be the first Asian American to serve on the NCUA board. Her term is to run through Aug. 2, 2029
Otsuka said during her nomination hearing that NCUA’s mission of ensuring a strong system of cooperative credit is one that “resonates with me both personally and professionally.”
Previously, Otsuka also served as an attorney at the FDIC, “gaining experience in supervision, enforcement, resolution, assessments, and deposit insurance,” the agency said.
In addition, she worked on FDIC policy actions related to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act (S. 2155).
Otsuka earned her J.D. from Boston College Law School and B.A. with distinction from the University of Virginia.
