TCPA Lawsuit Abuse on Congressional Calendar Today; Plus Other Events This Week

WASHINGTON–The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice today plans to review lawsuit abuse in connection with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).

NAFCU said it has repeatedly shared with Congress and the Federal Communications Commission how the interpretation of the TCPA makes it more difficult for credit unions to contact members about potentially fraudulent activity, identity theft and data breaches.
Also today, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet will examine a recent Supreme Court decision that now limits patent holders' ability to concentrate their infringement lawsuits in plaintiff-friendly jurisdictions.

“This decision is a win for credit unions because it will now be harder for patent trolls to come after them with frivolous claims,” stated NAFCU.

Other meetings and actions this week in Washington:

  • On Wednesday, the House Financial Services Committee will mark up several bills related to the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program, for which current funding ends Sept. 30.
  • The Senate Banking Committee on Thursday will hold a hearing, "Fostering Economic Growth: Midsized, Regional and Large Institution Perspective."
  • The House Science, Space, and Technology Joint Subcommittee on Oversight and Subcommittee on Research and Technology on Thursday will review lessons learned from the "WannaCry" global ransomware attack that occurred last month.
