Suspect Arrested In String Of Financial Institution Robberies

KEIZER, Ore.—A man suspected in a string of financial institution robberies, including two credit unions, has been arrested, the Corvallis Gazette-Times reported.

The Salem Police SWAT team served a search warrant at a residence in the 2200 block of Lee Street Southeast, arresting 50-year-old Jason Lee Welty last week, according to a news release from the Salem Police Department.

Welty was identified as the primary suspect in three financial institution robberies in Salem and one in Albany, the release states. He is charged with three counts of second-degree robbery, three counts of first-degree theft and three counts of menacing, the Corvallis Gazette-Times reported.

Welty is accused of robbing Valley Credit Union on May 21, Chase Bank on May 23 and Key Bank on May 28, all in Salem, as well as Northwest Community Credit Union at 707 Waverly Drive SE in Albany on Friday, May 31.

Northwest Community Credit Union was robbed by an unidentified suspect shortly before its closing time on May 31.

The Salem robberies took place in the afternoon hours and involved a man who displayed a handgun, demanded money from the bank teller, and left with varying amounts of cash. No bank employees were injured in any of the incidents, the Corvallis Gazette-Times said.

Separate charges for Welty are reportedly forthcoming from the Albany Police Department for the crimes committed there.
