PITTSBORO, N.C.–One man has been arrested here for allegedly entering a credit union branch, firing two shots and taking a branch manager hostage.
According to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department, they were called to respond to the incident at a branch of State Employees Credit Union in Pittsboro following a report of someone being inside the building with a gun. According to police, the arrest was made at the branch and no one was injured. Video shot from a helicopter showed a Pittsboro Mayor Cindy Perry told WRAL News that the CU manager, who was not identified, was taken hostage during the incident.
"Well, I must tell you that we have always prided ourselves on being such a safe and secure community, that this was a very big surprise to us," Perry told WRAL, adding she has worked together with the credit union employee on a town project. "He is fairly new to the (credit union and I hope that he is able to recover from what undoubtedly was a very difficult situation."
The name of the suspect has not been released. According to witnesses, at least four officers were seen entering the front of the credit union around 1:15 p.m. after the person in handcuffs was escorted away from the scene.
