WASHINGTON—The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has launched a survey on the electricity consumption of cryptocurrency mining in the country.
The EIA is running the survey from February through July 2024 with identified commercial cryptocurrency miners, who are required to respond with details related to their energy use. The Administration also is soliciting public comment on the collection of this energy use data, Smart Energy International reported.
“We intend to continue to analyze and write about the energy implications of cryptocurrency mining activities in the United States,” said EIA Administrator Joe DeCarolis. “We will specifically focus on how the energy demand for cryptocurrency mining is evolving, identify geographic areas of high growth and quantify the sources of electricity used to meet mining demand.”
Concern has been growing over the energy consumption of cryptocurrency mining, and Bitcoin in particular in the U.S., as it has also in other countries, the report added.
