ST. LOUIS–A new survey suggests credit unions not only have an opportunity to help members with moving expenses, but perhaps also with expenses for moving back.
The survey, conducted by Clever Real Estate, found 36% of Americans who moved in 2022 have regrets about their move, including wishing they never moved at all (20%) or wishing they chose a bigger home (20%).
The top reasons Americans moved in 2022 were to improve their quality of life (24%), live in a cheaper area (23%), and get a bigger place (22%), according to the survey.
“Money was an issue for most Americans who moved, however,” Clever reported. “Forty-three of Americans said the cost of moving surprised them — a whopping 46% spent over $2,000 on their move. To make matters worse, 37% of Americans believe they did not budget correctly for their move.”
In addition, Clever said the emotional toll of moving was significant, too. Moving caused nearly half of Americans to fight with their loved ones (43%), and 44% admit moving “brought them to tears,” according to Clever.
Other Findings
Among some of the other findings in the extensive survey:
- 37% of Americans chose just to rent a truck rather than hire professional movers. About 26% do hire movers, while 31% simply opt for assistance with getting boxes to and from a vehicle or pod.
- The most popular state people moved to was Florida, while the state people most often moved from is California.
- If money were no object, Americans would prefer to move to Los Angeles and California. Migration data, however, shows that more people are moving to cities such as Austin, Raleigh, and Orlando.
- Americans said their dream cities included Los Angeles (19%), Atlanta (18%), Austin (17%), Las Vegas (15%) and Miami (15%).
- The most common regret Americans had about their moving experience was wishing they had gone with a bigger place (20%). One-fifth of Americans (20%) also shared that after moving away, they missed their original home.
