Status of New NCUA Board Member, Avoiding Another Fed Gov’t Shutdown Lead the Agenda in DC This Week

WASHINGTON—Credit unions will be watching today to see if a new NCUA board member will be confirmed by the Senate to join the board.

As CUToday.info reported, Tanya Otsuka has already had her nomination hearing  confirmed by the Senate Banking Committee and is now awaiting the confirmation vote.  President Biden nominated Otsuka to serve on the agency’s board to fill the seat currently held by board member Rodney Hood, whose term expired in August.

Otsuka is currently senior counsel for the majority staff of the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee under Chairman Sherrod Brown (D-OH), where she has handled the committee’s work on banking and credit union issues since March 2020

“Once again, we reiterate that we look forward to working with her if she is confirmed,” said CUNA Deputy Chief Advocacy Officer for Federal Government Affairs Jason Stverak.

Another Shutdown?

Separately, Otsuka said CUNA will also be paying attention to efforts on Capitol Hill around the continuing resolution to avert yet another government shutdown.

“It's incredibly important, so we look forward to seeing continued work on that,” said Stverak. “I know our credit unions that will be up on the Hill will be looking for information from their members and how they will help federal employees impacted by any possible government shutdown.”

In addition, as both credit union trade groups have been noting for months, they remain wary of any language from the Credit Card Competition Act or the entire Act itself being attached to any larger bills or must-pass legislation, such as that government funding.

CUNA also noted representatives from the Illinois and Iowa leagues are in Washington this week to meet with legislators.
