FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—Giant office supplies retailer Staples has become the latest company to report a data breach, acknowledging that at least 1.16 million customer payment cards may have been compromised.
The company has been investigating the scope of the breach since October, when it said it joined with law enforcement to investigate a possible hacking. The exposure was discovered after multiple banks said they saw a pattern of payment card fraud. The company believes that approximately 115 of its stores are involved and that the breach took place when malware was installed on POS systems. Customer data that may be at risk would be on purchases made between July 20 and Sept. 16.
The company is now offering various credit protection services to customers, including a free credit report to those who shopped at the affected stores.
