FT. WAYNE, Ind.–A man who allegedly robbed the same credit union twice has been turned in by an unusual source: his son.
According to police, Michael D. Coates, 59, was the person who robbed the Three Rivers FCU branch just a few days apart. In both cases the robber handed a note to the teller and left with cash, according to documents filed in Allen Superior Court. In the second of the two robberies, Coates allegedly told a teller, “Put a grand up here,” while tapping his finger on the counter and then adding, “I was here last week.”
Police said they were contacted by Jacob Coates, the son of Micheal D. Coates, who said he knew who had stolen the money. The elder Coates was arrested less than an hour after the second robbery.
Each of the robbery charges carries a penalty of up to six years in prison.
