Some NCUA Staff Have Volunteered to Provide Assistance at U.S./Mexico Border, But Not in Any Official Capacity

ALEXANDRIA, Va.–Employees of NCUA have volunteered to provide support at the U.S. border with Mexico, but none have yet to go and, if they do, they will not be acting on behalf of the agency, NCUA said.

NCUA clarified the role its employees have offered to play at the border, where there has been an influx of immigrants seeking entry into the U.S., in response to questions that were originally raised by Chip Filson, co-founder of Callahan & Associates who also served as president of the Central Liquidity Facility (CLF) and director of the Office of Programs at NCUA.

NCUA said NCUA employees who have volunteered to go to the border have done so in response to a request from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management to all federal agencies to support the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

NCUA said its intention is not to allow more than 10 staff members at one time to participate, workload permitting.

‘Urgent Humanitarian Need’

As of May 11 the agency said support for what it called a “government-wide, urgent humanitarian need” falls under the authority of the NCUA’s Executive Director.

According to NCUA, HHS will reimburse the agency for all costs incurred, including employee compensation, travel, and incidental expenses.

“As with all interagency details, staff on detail to another federal agency remain employees of their home agency,” NCUA said, adding employees will not be taking personal leave should they travel to the border.
