HOUSTON–Credit unions have attached their names to all manner of sports teams and venues. Now axe-throwing competitions can be added to that list.
Houston Highway Credit Union is giving out free pint glasses filled with beer to the first hundred people to show up at an event sponsored by the Heights chapter of the Backyard Axe Throwing League. The first 50 to show also get a free T-shirt.
For credit unions unsure about the popularity of axe throwing as a sport, what began as one person’s hobby in 2006 has grown into a sport in which an estimated two-million Americans regularly participate. It includes the emergence of numerous venues for axe-throwing competitions. During the competitors, competitors stand away from a target and hurl axes towards it for points. Despite the name, the axes used in most competitions are camping hatchets.
The Houston market includes a number of venues, including Houston Axe Throwing, Ratchet Hatchet Houston, and Axe Masters Texas.
A spokesperson for the association said the competitions have a low incident of accidents.
