Smartphones Now Comprise 75% of Market

RESTON, Va.—Smartphones now make up 75.8% of the mobile market share in the United States, according to a new report.

A comScore study shows that as of January, there are approximately 184 million Americans that own a smartphone—a 4% increase from October 2014 to January 2015.

Apple devices claim a large portion of the market, representing 41.3% of smartphones owned. By comparison, Samsung makes up 29.3% and LG captures 8.0%.”

comScore reported that Android is the most popular smartphone operating system in the United States, making up 53.2% of the market. Apple claims 41.3%, while Microsoft, BlackBerry and other platforms make up less than 4% each.

“comScore also released information about the top 15 apps on the U.S. market, and Facebook continues to reign supreme,” explained John Oldshue, founder of SaveOnPhone.com, Birmingham, Ala. “Approximately 67% of U.S. smartphone users over the age of 18 use the Facebook app on their phones. The YouTube, Google Search and Google Play apps are all used by more than half the smartphone users.”
